DAY 8 National Novel Writers Month

Writers write because it’s our job. For many writers our pay is personal satisfaction in completing a blog post validated by someone liking, sharing and or commenting. Truth be told most self published author would be lucky to make $1,000 annually. When I first started writing, around 2010, my research revealed that the average self published writer earned around $5,000 a year. It is difficult to have a traditional publishing house to even look at your book, even harder to find an agent who is willing to present your book to the publishing house.
Being a writer in a world in which people would rather watch television or YouTube than read is not easy to sell books. Name recognition is just as important as subject matter (my opinion. The cost to print a book is not worth the risk of investment to a publishing house to publish the manuscript of an unknown individual who is writing his or her biography. And just because an author is accepted by a publishing company this does not guarantee he or she will be a best seller.
I wonder how many people actually publish their works after participating in National Novel Writing Month. None of my entries have been edited let alone published. After publishing 6 books I realize it is easier to write and release blog post and short books (less than 5,000 words) than to publish books. I am convinced that self publishing my writings in the form of ebooks and print brings will bring a greater profit. In addition because my blog (Nettieology.blogspot.com) is monetized I have the potential of earning money. I don’t publish my writings from National Novel Writing Month because they are not worth publishing.
I make money as a Tax Preparer and I live a very conservative lifestyle. I know other authors and they have sources of income outside of writing. Don’t quit your day job!

I write a lot of words on Facebook. I suspect that there are days in which I write over one thousand words on Social media. I realize that blogging is a better place to put my words, I would say that many writers write words that could be presented in a format such as a blog.
Writers also write long text messages because writers write.

I am an active participant of National Novel Writing Month- these entries are unedited on purpose- Marsha L Floyd
