PLAYING THE LYRE- MY WHY

LEARNING TO PLAY THE LYRE PART 1
Why did I decide, at the age of 63, to learn how to play the lyre? I wanted to try something that would challenge myself.
I loved classical music from the first time I heard it, and I was drawn to the harp. As a child I wanted to play the piano, though my mother purchased me a organ, I never learned to play it. I took Chorus in Junior High School, middle school today, which is how I learned to basics of reading music. My happy childhood memories are associated with music.
As I look over my life I am content, I am doing what I desire to do. I don’t have a bucket list so trying to come up with something to occupy my time is challenging. I sew, knit, crochet, and of course write but that is not time consuming; I recently started hand sewing. None of these activities are challenging enough, boredom can lead to bad habits like eating poorly or spending money.
One day, I found myself researching the cost of a harp, what lead up to this I do not know. I was not surprised at the cost however I noticed as the harps got smaller the price did as well. And then I saw a lyre, lyre harp and I thought I could buy that!
I did a mini investigation: reading Amazon reviews and watching YouTube videos. I mentioned to a few people that I was considering learning how to play a lyre, after explaining to those who did not know what it was, the consensus was: Go for it. I decided on the Donner 16 string lyre and told myself I would purchase it in November, it came on sale and I ordered it.
I received my lyre October 17, 2023 the challenges began October 18. Playing the lyre is not to complicated but putting the right information together to learn how to play it was a challenge. There is information out there however finding the information that is applicable for your type of lyre is not that easy.
I decided to journal my experience and share the references I found helpful including the links to YouTube channels and articles that helped me.
Though the blog will be about the lyre this journey is from the perspective a 63 year Christian woman trying something new. If you are offended by Christianity my blog is not for you.
