One of the things that bothered me when I was a part of Miami Vineyard Community Church was the casualness that people came to church. I remember a church member coming to church wearing shorts having driven his truck with his boat in tow; he and the Pastor were going boating after service. I also remember the day I decided to start dressing for church and bringing my Bible with me, I felt like a visitor. This was the beginning of my departure from this type of church, when the Vineyard moved to another location I followed for a few months and then left.
I have always studied Scripture in addition to church attendance, what I hear from the pulpit must agree with God’s word; this is what I learned at Victory Christian Church International, I moved to another state which is why I am not a part of it any more. (Or, did God move me?) From my studies as a Believer I am a servant of God, not His buddy.
Believers are disciples of God, students, always learning, and we are to help others be disciples. Believers should not be individuals who seek after stuff (see Matthew 6:33). We are to represent the Kingdom of God thus, I believe in dressing modestly, I believe that when I go to the house of God I should dress accordingly. And, I believe the church leader, the priest, should present himself as one who is representing the King of Kings.
Christianity today has become a in addition to activity. When I attended Miami Vineyard and Christ Journey I was able to complete my church attendance requirements in one Luke 14:25-33 (KJV)
25 And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?
29 Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
30 Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32 Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
33 So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
hour and 30 minutes, this would include: traveling to, parking, attending and coming home. Now, I did attend a church in which we spent hours, screaming and hollering and shouting Amen dressed in our church best, emotionalism is not what it is about either.
People know how to dress venue appropriate, be it to go to the club, a sporting event or a day out on the boat. Once upon a time Christians thought it important to dress in church clothes. Church clothes are now anything you want to wear, come as you are, as if you are just going to a friends house. Jesus is not your buddy,
Jesus is your Lord and Savior, submit to Him, Prepare to go into His presence with more thought than you take to go to the club or the sporting event. If the choice is between new outfit you can wear to the club and a new garment to wear to church, choose the church outfit.
Learn to honor God daily. Learn to honor God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit as Creator of heaven and earth as well as Your Creator. On Sunday, Saturday, are you going to a friends huse or are you going to God’s house? Are you wearing, in the presence of God, the same outfit you wore to the club or to the sporting event? Or are you putting on your “priestly” garments? (1 Corinthians 6:19, 2 Corinthians 6:16)
Your garments reflect your relationship with God. It isnot just on Sunday, or Saturday, but daily. God is you God 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, He is not your buddy. Jesus is God, He is your Savior, He should be Lord of your life not someone you “kick-it” with (have a casual relationship with). Some people have to many clothes in their closet. To many personalities.
