2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV)
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
I am currently reading a book about women in leadership: Why Sally Can’t Preach, it should be a fast read but it is not. Why? Because, Sally can and does preach and I, personally, believe Sally can teach and preach but she cannot have a position of leadership. As I read the book I am reviewing the Bible versus the author Jacob Tanner, uses to validate his beliefs.
Acts 17:10-12 (KJV)
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
The Bereans heard the word and then searched the Scriptures to validate what was taught: “and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” I also take note, I hope that you do too, that “honourable women” also are included in this conversation, Greek women.
Many people, myself included, have a tendencey to search the Scriptures to prove our point but fail to read the Word in context. There is a reason why Scripture teaches that women are to be quiet in the church and it is not because they cannot speak in church.
I am just on page 27 of this 89 page book but I had to pause and read my Bible to analyze an authors point. On page 24 he implies that Priscill was able to speak/ preach because she was with her husband (Acts 18:24-28) however, Deborah is not with her husband when she operates under her gifts as Judge and Prophetess- Acts 4:4- 5:15)
Judges 4:4-5 (KJV)
4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
At this point I do not want to read any more of this book but I will continue because it is important to know what is being taught and just in case I am wrong. Like the people in written I have the ability to open my Bible and read what is written to validate what I am being told.
I believe women should not have a position of authority over men BUT I also believe women can be very influential as to the direction a man walks in; example Eve and Adam. For whatever reason we, women, have a tendency to respond differently than men do. God, our Creator, declared that man would lead woman a.k.a. headship; I am OK with that.
Many people today, many churches today, have different “understandings’ of what the Bible means. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33) thus if you read the Bible for what it states, praying that He give you understanding, then you will be able to validate what you believe and what you should not believe.
I think it is very important for women to know what they believe. I know women who are Pastors, Elders and have positions of authority outside of the church. What should they do with the gifts they have, what do I do with my gifts? Decades ago God told me to not seek a title, I am not.
This author does not think women should teach Bible Study classes (page 24). I have taught Sunday School lessons with men as part of the class, under the authority of my Pastor and knowledge of my husband; I have taught Small Groups, under the authority of my Pastor and knowledge of my husband. Like Esther, I believe women need to do what they believe is necessary to help God’s children knowing that she will perish if she makes the wrong decision (Esther 4:6). I will write and from time to time I speak and men listen, it is the man’s choice to read what I write or even listen to me. I believe that I can do what God has called me to do without a position of leadership thus I do not need a title, or recognition from the masses.
Thank you for your comments.
