Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

She did not know any better. This girl respected her mother more than the police. She, apparently, was not taught to respect authority or how to address issues when the authority MIGHT be out of order.

Nothing is more important than parenting children. Many women figured out how to work hard AND raise children in the way she or he should go.
