Yesterday was day #1 of the 12 day WINTER WRITING CHALLENGE The assignment was to: Write a haiku about a cat in a Christmas tree. I passed on that challenge, though writing a haiku would have been an excellent challenge, I am not a cat person and a cat in a tree is not something I desired to write about.
What is a HAIKU? According to Google: A typical haiku has three lines with a 5-7-5 syllable structure: five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. The poem is usually written in present tense, does not rhyme, and aims to capture a moment, often with a seasonal reference.
Line 1: Five syllables
Line 2: Seven syllables
Line 3: Five syllables
Total: 17 syllables
No, I was not going to stress out about that challenge.
Today, Day 2, the challenge is: Write a vignette about waiting outside on the front porch. What is a VIGNETTE?
Cambridge Dictionary https://dictionary.cambridge.org › dictionary › vignette
a short piece of writing, music, acting, etc. that clearly expresses the typical characteristics of something or someone.
And here is my entry:
A PORCH STORY
It was the perfect day. The sun peaked gently onto the front porch as Momma Sue, as they called her, sat in her rocking chair knitting. The swift clicking of the needles rhythmic sounds were in sink with the melodies of the various birds that few in and out of the bird houses she had positioned in the trees on her land. Pearl three, knit one, pearl three, knit two, pearl three knit one, the blanket was half way done.
