Philippians 3:12-14 (KJV)
12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
As a Christian writer sometimes we have to let go of preconceived notions, beliefs that have been drilled into our minds and other false teachings. One of the things I have written were book reviews, I was very harsh on individuals who wrote based on Scripture, and I expect the same standard to be held with me. We never stop learning, at least we shouldn’t, never stop seeking more information because we are not yet perfect. There were a lot of things I thought were true but as I have studied and matured I have discovered my teachings were not accurate, thus not true.
Even fiction writers must fine-tune their skills, particularly in the area of character development. The more we, as writers, learn about people and their nuances the better we can develop the various characters. Though many Christian novels are very pure, Urban Christian fiction reflects what really happens. In my book: The Truth About Vashtai, the main character smokes cigars and has sexual relations outside of marriage; there is also profanity spoken by another character. I believe it is necessary to present these character flaws in order to get to the end (no spoiler here!). But, not every one wants to read profanity or know that the character fornicated thus the information has to be presented in a different way with just as much anger and or passion.
I would love to sell a million dollars worth of books but I don’t expect to, I do expect to improve my skills with every word I write. “I press toward the mark for the prize..”, my prize is to know that I did what God called me to do write. Christian writers like other types of ministries are gifts from God, it is important that we do. We may not have “apprehended” every thing theres is to know about writing but we should attempt to stretch ourselves, challenge ourselves, to do what we are called to do.
A Christian writer is a Christ centered writer. We do not write erotic, perverted, slanderous, vulgar, demonic or any such ungodly words. We, Christian writers, do not take the word of God in vain out of context. Christian writers write with a purpose: to lead people to God through Jesus His Son, to educate people on Bible principles and to give God glory.
