I clocked in for work today in order to do required training, I am required to do a specific number of hours every two weeks until the business season resumes. I was going to do it yesterday and came up with an excuse not to and so I did it today, rather than wait until the deadline was just hours away. Even though the one hour training was accomplished in 40 minutes it was still a struggle- I actually started nodding off! The information presented was information I already knew.
I have 6 projects that are in various stages of development, 3 carry-all bags, 2 quilts and a pair of pants. My goal is to finish the pants ASAP, and 2 of the bags before the end of this year. There is no rush on the quilts and one carry-all bag is for me and one quilt is for me. Because of my work schedule the quilts will not be completed within the next 12 months, because of work.
Most people, especially young people, do not understand the necessity of generating a dependable income while pursuing one’s desires. I have seen people make a lot of money producing items for sell and then reach a plateau, no income. You do not get rich simply by having a dream and a successful business grand opening. The economy influences most businesses.
I have made a profit selling what I make. A profit is the amount of money left over after you subtract the cost of whatever is needed to generate the income making thing. My profit was not enough to live comfortably, I doubt if it ever will.
No matter how talent you are, your competition has just as much talent. It is important to manage your money wisely if you goal is to live off of money other than from a job.
As a sewist who specialize in hand made unique items I do not have a quick turnover rate; I do not mass produce the same item. And, not everyone wants what I make , thus, like my writing, my target audience is very small. I do sell items from time to time but I am not dependent on what I make as a source of income.
Work is a necessary evil, 27 years ago I loved what I do now, in the words of B.B. King- “The thrill is gone!” I have an exit plan, it will take a maximum of three years and then I will be able to do what I do without the inconvenience of working.
